3o km from Ernakulam, on the high ranges of the Sothern bank of the Periyar River lies Kodanad, a fascinating and charming semi rural village.

Kodanad elephant training center is a peaceful spot among forest-like environment. Before 1977, elephants were captured from the nearby Malayattoor forest and were trained in Kodanand. But now, Kodanad Training Center trains elephants from very young age.

Tourists can have an elephant ride by paying fees. The elephants have been specially trained for safari and are provided with saddles to make the riding comfortable. There is a small wildlife park inside the training center which accommodates a number of animals and birds.

Kodanad elephant training center is about 45 km from Ernakulam (Cochin or Kochi) and 12 km to the east of Perumbavoor town. This is one of the largest elephant training centres of Kerala. .

This place is also well known for the beautiful river banks and the side walks along the riversides which give a magical and refreshing experience to the visitors on Tour to Kodanad. The Eco Tourism campaign of the government recently added Kodanad in its list of eco tourism destinations.
