Located on the banks of Chittur river in Palakkad is a unique farming venture that has undertaken the mission to bring back the fast losing significance of Navara, a grain considered to be of great value from a healthcare point of view. And at the helm of this one-man farming crusade is Mr. Narayanan Unny.

Navara is a rice variety endemic to Kerala, mainly seen in the northern parts. The cultivation of this rice variety is recorded from 2500 years ago. Navara is widely used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine, especially in Panchakarma treatment.

Spread over an area of 18 acres, the Navara Eco Farm near Chittur in Palakkad also has other types of crops like coconut, mango, pomegranate, medicinal herbs, bamboo and vegetables. The eco farm is an organic certified one by Indocert, which is an accredited agency of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

At the ancestral house located in the farm, visitors can have a close look at some of the old and traditionally used farming implements; varieties of Navara and rice seeds and literature on various farm products. The farm has a walkway that is ideal for leisurely strolls and for familiarization with about 80 varieties of trees and plants, most of them fruit bearing.

The Navara fields in the farm can become the activity zone for the visitors, who are interested in various farming tasks available at a particular period of the year; like sowing, weeding, harvesting etc.

Getting there:

Nearest railway station: Palakkad Jn, about 20 km

Nearest airport: Coimbatore, about 55 kms; Cochin International Airport, about 130 kms
